A fine spirited attack and a “never die” attitude saw Rye seconds (The GOONS) take on East Grinstead 3’s. East Grinstead who were third in the league and had beaten RYE 2’s this season by some 20 odd points were confident and rearing to go .
Skipper DOWNS rolled back the years scoring two fine tries due to the constant pressure placed on him by inside centre and team critic “Telly-Tubby ” Chris CHALLINOR.
Having had a particularly poor previous game Telly-Tubby took it upon himself to at every given opportunity (in -person text message , smoke signal , you name it !) to inform the out of form skipper just how poor he had played. Hopefully this will put my number one critic at bay for at least a week. If anyone is interested Telly-Tubby does offer courses in “how to influence people and win friends”.
Another solid performance from wing , OLLY saw him scoring two excellent tries despite nearly having his head knocked off from a very high tackle.
Hardman Thomas EDWARDS had his work cut out for him as the opposing eightman was a man mountain .Playing out of position at flank , EDWARDS had a steady game . Fortunately for the team he didn’t receive his mandatory concussion, just as well as we had no reserves.
Despite having the dreaded “man-flu” , MOOSE led by example with some solid tackling and ball carrying.
When the firsts whom were playing on the adjoining field took one of our players due to an injury in their game the tempo of the match changed, and East Grinstead clawed their way back.
The scores were 31-30 to RYE when Graham NUNN stupidly and deliberately infringed right in front of the ref and the poles.
With only seconds remaining in the match , East Grinstead opted for a kick at poles which would’ve seen them steal a win.
Fortunately for RYE they missed and RYE were victorious 31-30.
A fine effort and gutsy performance by all the team.
NUNNY- thanks to you Mrs for finally releasing the handbrake and allowing you out to play with the boys.
Next week sees us take on undefeated high-flyers Heathfield 4 at home at 14:15.

Leaving early but getting stuck in stationary traffic for over an hour…. PRICELESS!
At least we fulfilled the fixture, well done to the few players that bothered to travel up!!

Saturday 24th October saw Rye seconds , “GOONS” , travel to Heathfield to take on their fourth’s ,”BOARS”
Heathfield were and remain undefeated having not lost a game so far this season.
It was always going to be a “David v Goliath ” scenario and as GOON’S luck would have it , Goliath was not to be toppled.
Despite being second from bottom of the league and taking on the high-flying Heathfield 4th team , Rye seconds were confident they could compete as well as any.
The first ten minutes saw a very unsettled Goons team concede two tries due to very weak defending , following very powerful running from some “ KIWI Fella” who was going to be a thorn in their side all match.
Squaddie, Aidan Brown was not as solid in defence as previous weeks .
Fortunately for the team , “Hardman” Tom EDWARDS had got his diary appointments correct this week and decided to show the forwards how the WELSH tackle. Very solid defence and tackling and a fine try saw him take joint man of the match with youngster Alex SATTERFIELD.
Alex scored a try and instigated several try scoring opportunities. So good on the day was Alex that Aidan accepted a masterclass from him in the art of playing fullback.
A fine display from the the “three piggies” up front gave the scrum a solid platform.
Taff “I never blow my own trumpet” GARRISH , had a very fine solo effort collecting the ball from our 22 metre line and scoring under the posts. Needless to say the entire club are already aware as the compulsory text was forwarded to all and sundry.
Eigth man “Moose” scored a powerful try from 10metres out. It is amazing how much quicker he is when the try line is beckoning and he has ball in hand. No , Moose the RFU will not agree to a 10metre long pitch.
Despite their standing in the league, Rye pulled it together and played the far more attractive rugby.
Final score Heathfield 48 - Rye 35.
Try scores were Waz , Alex , Tom E , Mooseman and Taff.
Next week sees us take on Seaford 2’s in a cup game.
Kick off 3pm at home.

Travelling to East Grinstead with only 12 players available due to non-availability RYE 2′S were always facing a mammoth task of merely competing against one of the stronger oppositions , East Grinstead 3’s.
Having a secret weapon in the form of hardman , Tom EDWARDS , Rye Goons were quietly confident that we could give the opposition a run for their money despite the depleted numbers.
One the whole Rye played their hearts out against a well oiled and practising opposition who scored most their tries against the flow of play.
A gutsy performance from Andy and Moose saw our pack compete admirably against a pack that regulary played and practised together (”practise” a word most GOONS don’t recognise).
Hardman Tom EDWARDS unfortunately thought he was attending his amateur dramatics class on the day and spent most of the game on the floor feining injury. A very convincing effort Tom. You had most of the team fooled.
Distant welsh relative and scrumhalf Chris EDWARDS attended the match believing it was his weekly RIVERDANCE session. Every time the ball reached the back of the scrum Chris entertained the opposition with his rendition of RIVERDANCE , refusing to stoop and pick up the ball and pass to his ball starved backs.
Youngster , Luke CROSS left his skipper gobsmacked after missing an easy tackle only to retort “I can’t tackle”.
Needless to say a few more tries were made as a result of breaks through the midfield , thanks to our non-tackling youngster.
If only his tackling skills were as aggressive as that of his driving - although that’s a story for another day.
Another solid effort from Aidan Brown at fullback. And I thought they said “squaddies” were all soft.
Despite the scoreline reading 39-3 to East Grinstead 3’s , it was not a true reflection of the match and we walked away with several positives.
This weeks sees us take on high-flying Heathfield at home.
